What is the Entourage effect

What is the Entourage effect

What is The Entourage Effect and how can it help?

The most overall beneficial effect of all the compounds found in cannabis working together

In a nutshell the term – THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT means the overall beneficial effect of all the compounds found in hemp working together

The cannabinoids are the building blocks that give cannabis the properties it has and what separates it from every other plant species out there.

The entourage effect helps maximise CBD’s beneficial effects. It occurs when the compounds within the cannabis plant interact with each other and with our bodies. The combination of compounds produces a stronger influence than any individual one in what is called a ‘synergistic effect’.

Simply put, the entourage effect is the benefit you get from ingesting multiple components of CBD together instead of ingesting one at a time.

In 1998, doctors Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat were the first to suggest that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) showed an ‘entourage effect.’ According to the Israeli researchers, various inactive metabolites and related molecules appeared to boost the activity of primary endogenous cannabinoids in the human body. Read more on this in our article on the HISTORY OF CBD here.

The entourage effect basically suggests that CBD is not solely responsible for the beneficial effects it produces in the body. The presence of other cannabinoids – such as CBN and CBDV – as well as terpenes like beta-caryophyllene and myrcene, appear to “amplify” the activity of CBD and its influence on various physiological systems.

Many people think that terpenes have a far more impactful presence in hemp extract than previously imagined. Terpenes are fascinating, not least because we are still finding out how much they can help us. You can find terpenes everywhere, from the skin of citrus fruits to the essential oils squeezed from plant seeds. Which is why many CBD topical products are blended with essential oils.

Apart from smelling great, terpenes appear to help CBD function in the most efficient way possible. A good example is to think of it like a car.  Imagine driving down the road with a flat tyre, shattered windscreen and leaking oil.  It is driveable but it would be much more efficient and effective if all those parts were working properly and all together.

What does CBD have to do with The Entourage Effect?

Some people have incorrectly referred to this phenomenon as the “CBD entourage effect.” Indeed, CBD plays a tremendous role in the synergistic effects produced by dozens of hemp compounds working together and interacting with one another. However, it is inaccurate to label it as the most important part of the process.

In fact, no single hemp component should be labelled as the most important aspect of the entourage effect.  All the “working internal parts” of hemp play a role; even if a single phytochemical component is missing, the cumulative effect may be diluted.

That being said – and going back to the car analogy – some hemp components do likely play more influential roles in terms of doing what the car is designed to do – which is get down the road as efficiently as possible. So with this example CBD would almost certainly be the engine of the car; without it, the car is not going anywhere. So while it is incorrect to label the entourage effect as the “CBD entourage effect,” there’s no denying that CBD plays a massive role in the whole synergistic process.

An “Entourage” of CBD Products…

So, what’s a potential CBD customer to make of all this information?

The CBD market has grown dramatically over the past couple of years.  There are many brands out there to choose from and you need to take care where you buy your CBD products from.

So how do you know which one is best for you?

It goes without saying that any quality CBD oil product needs to start out with quality hemp. hapihemp source all their hemp using non-GMO, organic hemp.

Another golden rule is to ensure that whatever CBD company you choose – they have independent lab reports to view online.

What else should I know about CBD Oil & The Entourage Effect?

In order to take full advantage of the entourage effect, use a full spectrum CBD oil. Full-spectrum products contain a complete range of hemp’s natural phytochemicals — including small amounts of THC at levels of 0.2% or less.
If you want to avoid consuming THC altogether, a THC / broad-spectrum product oil would be a better option. You can read more about the difference between full spectrum and THC free here.
THC CBD products are very similar to full-spectrum products. The only difference is that these CBD oils are 100% THC-free.

hapihemp understands that each customer is different and offers both full spectrum and THC free CBD oils.

The Bottom Line

According to the phenomenon of the entourage effect, CBD is most effective when in the presence of other natural hemp phytocompounds. In other words, it appears that cannabinoids (including CBD) are influenced by the presence of compounds like terpenes, flavonoids. Both full spectrum and THC free CBD products contain a variety of hemp compounds.
